Design a Chair
Design a chair made from plywood using CNC or laser cutter fabrication method. The chair must accommodate assembly or disassembly by hand. No screws, nails, glue, or tape can be used.
Winners will receive $500 cash prize and bragging rights.
The winning design will be fabricated at our shop and added to the open library with attribution back to the designer. We’ll make your product at our shop and take professional product photos of it at our beach shoot location and share them with you.
The product will be featured at all of the shows we present at for at least 3 months. See entry requirements. Winning designs will be promoted through a variety of our channels including: Our Obrary Homepage, social media, and press release.
Entries must be received by October 12, 2014
- Photos of the physical prototype must be submitted. Show photos of the actual product. Empty and with person sitting on it.
- Design source files. For example: Sketchup (.skp), Rhino (3DM), AutoCAD (.dwg)
- Interchange files. For example: DXF and PDF
- CAM Files. For example: VCarve (CRV)
- A short writeup about the design inspiration and the process to get to the final product.
- Bonus points for video of how to assemble and disassemble product.
- Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include files or provide a link to where files can be accessed.
- Stability of the chair when being sat upon
- Total strength of the chair
- Ease of assembly and disassembly

Obrary reserves the right to modify, cancel, postpone or end the competition at any time as necessary, at their sole discretion, or to disqualify any participant or winner, at their sole discretion, deemed to have cheated, destroyed, obstructed, or otherwise acted illegally or in bad faith in relation to this competition.
By submitting an entry and entering this competition, you represent and warrant that: you are over the age of 18, or entering with the knowledge and permission of your parent or guardian (subject to verification), and that the entry does not contain or incorporate the intellectual property and/or confidential information of any third party. By submitting an entry and entering this competition, you hereby grant Obrary a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, transferable, worldwide, royalty free right to publish and distribute your entry for their promotional purposes and to add your design to the Obrary open design library under the CC BY-SA license.. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Rules, or the rights of entrants, shall be governed by and construed in accordance with, the substance laws of the State of Delaware and any applicable laws and regulations of the United States.
